Hand Dyed Mulberry Silk Carrier Rods

Description

Hand Dyed Silk Carrier Rods— these are a by product of the reeling of silk from the cocoon in the silk spinning industry.  As silk filaments are unraveled from the cocoon, they wrap around a rod, called a carrier rod.  Some of the filaments get stuck under the rod.  These stuck filaments are reclaimed and can be useful in a variety of ways!

The rods are 5 – 5½” (13 – 15cm) long when whole and unscrunched.  These are degummed and layers partially separated into individual pieces for you.  The worm has also been removed and believe me, that part was not fun!  There may be some shorter pieces mixed in.  These are sold in 1/2 ounce amounts and I currently have three colors available— pink, gold, and green.

These can be spun, but note your fingers will need to be close together, as the fibers are short.  They also work wonderfully in silk fusion, textural stitching, jewelry, and embellishing in felting and embroidery!

 They can be pressed flat or pulled apart to reveal the interesting criss–cross of the fibres
